With the city’s aim to enhance and expand the application of smart technology following the Government’s release of β€œSmart City Blueprint for Hong Kong 2.0”, autonomous vehicles (β€œAV”) have constantly been a topical issue. Technical and operational challenges aside, the legal risks involved with AVs are often unclear. In the event of accidents involving AVs, drivers, insurance companies, the injured, and even car manufacturers, would have a common question: β€œwhose fault is it?”.

Whilst there remain a lot of uncertainties in this area, our Managing Partner Alan Chiu and Trainee Solicitor Hank Yeung, wish to highlight in this article, for discussion purpose, certain key legal issues that may be involved when operating AVs.
